Organizations Advocating for Reparations

Several organizations across the United States are actively pushing for reparations for African Americans, advocating for policies, raising awareness, and educating the public on the need to address historical injustices and the ongoing impacts of slavery, segregation, and systemic discrimination. Here are some of the leading organizations:

1. National Coalition of Blacks for Reparations in America (N’COBRA)
  • Mission: Founded in 1987, N’COBRA is one of the oldest organizations advocating for reparations for African Americans. It works on educating the public, influencing policy, and promoting legislative efforts, including supporting H.R. 40, the federal bill that would establish a commission to study reparations.

  • Activities: The group organizes conferences, forums, and educational events to raise awareness and mobilize support for reparations.

2. NAARC (National African American Reparations Commission)
  • Mission: NAARC was established in 2015 by a group of scholars, activists, and leaders to create a comprehensive framework for reparations. It works to advance a 10-point reparations program, which includes education, economic development, land restoration, and criminal justice reform.

  • Activities: NAARC engages in public policy advocacy, provides educational resources, and works with local governments to develop reparations initiatives.

3. Movement for Black Lives (M4BL)
  • Mission: M4BL is a coalition of over 150 organizations, including Black Lives Matter chapters, advocating for racial justice and reparations as part of a broader platform for Black liberation.

  • Activities: The coalition’s policy platform includes reparations demands such as cash payments, land reform, investments in Black education, and criminal justice reform. They have organized numerous campaigns and mobilization efforts to support reparative justice.

4. Reparations United
  • Mission: This network supports community-driven reparations initiatives across the country, advocating for both federal and local-level reparations.

  • Activities: Reparations United provides resources to grassroots organizations, hosts conferences, and works on reparations awareness campaigns and community projects focused on education, health, and economic empowerment.

5. American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU)
  • Mission: While not solely focused on reparations, the ACLU has become a strong advocate for reparations as part of its racial justice and civil rights work. The ACLU pushes for policy changes that address historical injustices faced by African Americans.

  • Activities: ACLU has released reports, supported local reparations initiatives, and is a strong proponent of H.R. 40. It also collaborates with other reparations advocacy groups to build broader support.

6. The Black Lives Matter Global Network Foundation
  • Mission: BLM has integrated reparations into its advocacy for social and economic justice, viewing reparations as a means to address racial disparities and uplift Black communities.

  • Activities: BLM chapters across the U.S. have campaigned for reparations, including supporting legislative efforts and participating in broader coalitions to push reparative justice policies.

7. Institute of the Black World 21st Century (IBW21)
  • Mission: A research and advocacy organization that promotes reparations, IBW21 hosts national and international discussions on reparations and works to build coalitions with African and Caribbean nations for a global reparative justice movement.

  • Activities: IBW21 organizes conferences, forums, and the annual National Reparations Conference, where advocates gather to discuss policy proposals and strategies for advancing reparations.

8. FirstRepair
  • Mission: Founded by Evanston Alderwoman Robin Rue Simmons, FirstRepair focuses on advocating for local reparations initiatives and helping cities implement reparations policies, inspired by the reparations program launched in Evanston, Illinois.

  • Activities: FirstRepair provides guidance to municipalities considering reparations programs, advocating for solutions such as housing and economic development grants for Black residents.

9. CARICOM Reparations Commission
  • Mission: Although primarily based in the Caribbean, CARICOM has partnered with U.S.-based reparations organizations to pursue a coordinated approach to reparations for descendants of enslaved Africans, addressing both historical and modern impacts of slavery.

  • Activities: CARICOM collaborates with U.S. groups to create public awareness, co-host events, and advocate for reparative justice initiatives that also impact African American communities in the United States.

10. Afrodescendant Nation
  • Mission: Our Mission is to unify Afrodescendants around the issues of self-determination, Human Rights and reparations for the development of a Nation with peace and liberty through fair, equitable and just laws.

11. American Descendants of Slavery (ADOS) Advocacy Foundation
  • The American Descendants of Slavery (ADOS) Advocacy Foundation is a grassroots organization that arose in response to a national landscape rife with yawning racialized gaps.

  • With an eye toward the origins of these asymmetrical outcomes located in the institution of slavery, our organization prioritizes reparations for descendants of chattel slavery in the United States of America.
